How Much Does an E-6 Make in 2026?
E-6 is the rank where military pay starts to look like a career salary. Staff sergeants, technical sergeants, and petty officers first class sit in the middle of the enlisted force, usually with 6 to 10 years in, and their paychecks reflect it. Here is the full 2026 stack for an E-6 with the actual DFAS numbers: basic pay by years of service, the tax free allowances, and what the total really looks like.
Basic pay: $3,401 to $5,268 a month
An E-6 fresh to the grade with under 2 years of service earns $3,401.10 a month in basic pay, or $40,813.20 a year. An E-6 with 8 years, the most common profile, earns $4,612.80 a month ($55,353.60 a year). At 10 years the rate is $4,759.50, and an E-6 topped out at 18 or more years earns $5,267.70 a month ($63,212.40 a year). That is a $1,866 monthly spread inside one pay grade, which is why "E-6 pay" is not one number.
These are the official DFAS figures effective January 1, 2026, after the 3.8 percent raise. Verify any of them in the 2026 military pay chart lookup. For comparison with the grades around it, see what an E-5 makes in 2026 and what an E-1 makes.
BAS: the food money
Basic Allowance for Subsistence in 2026 is $476.95 a month for enlisted members, tax free. That is $5,723.40 a year that arrives regardless of duty station or rank. It does not scale with grade, so an E-6 and an E-1 get the same BAS, but it is a bigger percentage of a junior member's pay.
BAH: where the E-6 paycheck splits in two
Basic Allowance for Housing is tax free and location driven, and for an E-6 it is the second biggest line on the LES. E-6 BAH runs a few hundred dollars above the E-5 rate in the same market. In Kansas, for example, 2026 with-dependents BAH spans $1,314 to $1,815 for an E-5 and $1,689 to $2,133 for an E-6. The location swing dwarfs the grade difference: our BAH data shows a $2,757 monthly gap between San Diego and Fort Polk for an E-5 with dependents, and E-6 rates scale the same way.
Put the pieces together for an E-6 with 8 years: $4,612.80 basic plus $476.95 BAS is $5,089.75 a month before housing. Add your Military Housing Area's BAH rate on top of that. In a cheap market the all-in total lands near $6,600 a month; in an expensive one it pushes past $9,400. That is $79,000 to $113,000 a year in total compensation, with roughly a third of it tax free. Where you are stationed has always been the real answer to how much an E-6 makes, and 2026 is no exception.
What is not in these numbers
Special and incentive pays stack on top: flight pay, dive pay, hazardous duty, enlistment and reenlistment bonuses, assignment incentive pay. None of that is in the chart because it depends on your job and orders. Neither is the tax advantage quantified above, free health care through TRICARE, or the retirement pension accruing in the background. Basic pay is the trunk of the tree, not the whole tree.
My take
E-6 is where the compensation math quietly beats most civilian alternatives for someone without a degree. An E-6 with 8 years and dependents in a mid cost market takes home the equivalent of a civilian salary well into six figures, with health care and a pension attached. The trade is the one the military always offers: the money is real, and you do not get to choose the zip code it is paid in. Run your own numbers for your grade and duty station instead of trusting anyone's headline figure, including mine.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an E-6 make a month in 2026?
E-6 basic pay in 2026 runs from $3,401.10 a month with under 2 years of service to $5,267.70 a month at 18 or more years. An E-6 with 8 years earns $4,612.80 a month. These are taxable basic pay figures; tax-free BAH and BAS are added on top.
How long does it take to make E-6?
Typically 6 to 8 years of service, though it varies widely by branch and job. Fast-promoting career fields can make E-6 in 5 years; slow ones can take 10 or more.
What is an E-6 called in each branch?
Staff Sergeant in the Army and Marine Corps, Technical Sergeant in the Air Force and Space Force, and Petty Officer First Class in the Navy and Coast Guard.
What is the total compensation for an E-6 with dependents?
Basic pay plus tax-free BAH and $476.95 monthly BAS. An E-6 with 8 years earns $55,353.60 a year in basic pay alone; with BAH and BAS, total annual compensation commonly lands between $80,000 and $115,000 depending on duty station.
Does an E-6 get BAH?
Yes. E-6s with dependents living off base draw the full with-dependents BAH rate for their duty station's Military Housing Area. Single E-6s assigned to barracks generally do not draw BAH.
