How Much Does an O-1 Make in 2026?

Everyone knows the enlisted numbers get discussed endlessly. The officer side deserves the same treatment. How much does an O-1 make in 2026? A brand-new second lieutenant or ensign earns $4,150.20 a month in basic pay, which becomes $4,478.70 a month once you add the tax-free officer BAS of $328.50. That is $53,744 a year in cash before the housing allowance, which is where the real money lives.

The 2026 O-1 pay scale

Officer basic pay moves on a time-in-service grid, just like enlisted. The 3.8% raise that took effect January 1, 2026 is already baked into every number below:

Years of serviceBasic pay / month+ BAS / monthCash / year
Under 2$4,150.20$4,478.70$53,744
2$4,320.00$4,648.50$55,782
4$5,222.40$5,550.90$66,611

The jump at 4 years is the big one: $5,222.40, a $900 raise over the 2-year mark. In practice, few officers sit at O-1 long enough to see it. Promotion to O-2 typically comes around 18 months, and O-3 around the 4-year mark, so the O-1 scale is a brief stop on the way up. Still, it is the number that matters for the academy graduate, the OCS grad, and anyone weighing a commission against a civilian job offer.

Full-year picture, under 2 years

$53,744 cash + BAH

$4,150.20 basic pay x 12 plus $328.50 BAS x 12, all before the tax-free housing allowance. BAH for an O-1 with dependents ranges from around $1,500 to over $5,000 a month depending on the duty station.

The O-1E shortcut nobody should ignore

If you are prior enlisted with at least 4 years of enlisted service, you commission as an O-1E, not an O-1, and the difference is not small. An O-1E at 4 years earns $5,222.40 in basic pay, about $1,072 more per month than a standard O-1 at the same point. The O-1E scale also keeps climbing past 18 years of service, where the standard O-1 scale simply stops. Over a 20-year career, that pay-code letter is worth a staggering amount. It is one of the strongest financial arguments for enlisting first and commissioning later, especially for anyone close to the 4-year mark.

What the base number leaves out

Basic pay plus BAS is the floor, not the total. BAH is the biggest missing piece: officer BAH rates run higher than enlisted for the same area, and in expensive markets the allowance dwarfs basic pay. An O-3 with dependents in Westchester County, NY draws $6,633 a month in BAH, more than O-1 basic pay itself. Then there are the extras that apply to some officers: flight pay, sea pay, hazardous duty pay, special incentive pays for fields like medicine and aviation. A pilot O-1 with aviation incentive pay is playing a different financial game than an infantry O-1.

Tax note: BAS and BAH are both non-taxable, which means the O-1's $53,744 cash figure understates its civilian equivalent. Roughly $3,942 of it (BAS) plus all of BAH never sees a tax return. Compare officer pay to civilian offers on an after-tax basis or you will undersell the uniform.

For context on the enlisted side, an E-1 makes $2,407 in basic pay in 2026, while an E-5's full package with BAH and BAS often lands in the $55,000 to $70,000 range depending on location. The O-1's advantage over an E-5 is real but narrower than most civilians assume, because BAH and BAS do heavy lifting for both. Where the officer premium really compounds is at O-3 and above, and in the pension math at 20 years. My opinion: the O-1 number is the wrong number to fixate on. Commission for the career trajectory, not the starting salary. An O-1 at $53,744 plus housing looks modest next to a civilian engineering offer. An O-4 at 10 years, with a pension accruing behind it, is a different story entirely.
